Following a busy three days of recording, the CSB was the featured band for the Saturday night concert held in conjunction with Hannaford Street Silver Band's 7th Annual Festival of Brass. The program was the culmination of a day of activities that brought together brass bands from the Greater Toronto Area as well as groups from outside Ontario.
CSB items included James Curnows'
Hallelujah!, Shostakovich's
Festive Overture (arr. William Gordon), the march
Lowell Anniversary by Stephen Bulla, and Morley Calvert's
Canadian Folk Song Suite. Soloists Steve Pavey and Leigh Rowney presented
A Joy Untold (Camsey) and
Joyous Rhythm (Grainger) respectively.
The featured guest of the night was renowned trumpet virtuosos Allen Vizzutti, who played his own composition
The Rising Sun, accompanied by the CSB. It was an awe-inspiring performance that left both band and audience breathless. Vizzutti's flawless renditions on piccolo trumpet, flugel horn and regular trumpet - including some very impressive cadenzas - simply left everyone spellbound in what seemed like a completely effortless presentation, leaving no doubt is to why he is considered one of the greatest trumpeters of our time.
To finish the program, the CSB was pleased to have Mr. Vizzutti sit in with our solo cornet section for Paul Lovatt-Cooper's
Vitae Aeternum, a tour-de-force conclusion to a night of music that will be remembered for years to come.
